A Minnesotan’s Sojourn to Chicago.

Waking up on a Friday morning, specifically at two, it was September 8th. I realized that it was one day till I turned 25, marking the halfway point of the best years of my life. Suddenly it hit me that this could tell a great story, so I knew I had to play it straight and take my chance. Quickly as possible, I grabbed my adventure bag that I keep in my closet that is filled with a few outfits, my passport,
and some toiletries.

At 2:15 in the morning, I called a Lyft. Yes, I went to the airport with no ticket, plans or any place to stay. I just knew that I wanted to get the hell out of Dodge for an adventure.

A few years back, I got tipped off by a barista who told me that she goes to the airport to wait for free standby tickets. That is exactly what I did. In eager anticipation of the car ride over, I waited and twiddled my thumbs hoping that this would work.

I remember watching the clock, waiting for them to call my name for standby tickets. Three in the morning, three-thirty, three-forty five, three fifty and suddenly there was a seat that opened up thirty minutes before a flight to Chicago.

Just like that, I was on a free plane ride to the Windy City.

After major delays, I finally arrived at 7:30 in the morning. Still, I didn’t really have a place to stay and it was too early to text any of my friends if I could stay with them.

As you can tell, I am a major risk taker. Moving on, I have some friends in Logan Square Park, so my best bet was to take a train going that way. When I stepped off of that train, it was time to go into survival mode so naturally, I needed pancakes, bacon and a pot of coffee.

I had about 18 hours to find a place to stay.

At 8:45 in the morning, exhausted out of my mind, I began texting friends all over the city with zero expectation of having a place to stay.

One of my mate’s, Nigel Hemingway, responded saying that he was in Bloomington, Illinois and that he would be back to his flat at 9 pm. Luckily his roommate was working from home at that point in time, so he linked me up with him so I could take a nap at his place and leave my stuff there before I traversed the city.

After my quick coffee-cat nap it was time to explore the city. Who knew that after waking up at two in the morning that I would be in a city foreign to Minneapolis.

This whole spur of the moment trip was all based on a leap of faith that everything would work out. Why may you ask that I would do something like this? Well, because how are you able to learn perspective in life when you are always in your comfort zone.

Not to mention, I did this same thing going to New York City almost three years ago, but this is another story for another day.

First, I proceeded to wander aimlessly around town with no sense of direction only to stop at every funky restaurant that seemed cool to explore. My main goal was to eat my way through the city. All of the walking that I did made it easy to eat many meals that day. But, the main destination was Smoque BBQ, an eatery that my Father takes me to whenever we are in Chicago. I sure wished that he was there because that is his favorite restaurant.

During this long and magical odyssey, sort of like T.S. Elliot’s famous poem, “Journey of the Magi”, the adventure outweighed all of the pain in my feet from walking so far that day along with the little sleep the night before.

In short, with a “say yes” attitude, I splurged over the supermarkets in Little Vietnam and explored the parks and monuments all over the city. A strange lady gave me a foot massage, ate some ribs, and I even had my first chicken and waffles. I stumbled upon an African clothing store where I bought this vibrant colored shirt and I also ate a burrito out of a food truck. I even got to speak Spanish with a lot of people, which I don’t have the chance to do here in Minneapolis, marking one of my favorite highlights of this spectacular sojourn.

Suddenly, I found myself in Wrigleyville for happy hour.

This was a whirlwind.

Everything stopped when I was hanging out with Cubs fans before their game against the Brewers. The atmosphere was so cinematic that I needed to break down and buy a Cub’s hat so that I could blend into this euphoric environment.

The game was to start at 1:20 pm but got moved to 7:10 pm. What great luck that I had and perfect timing! Night games are pretty special at Wrigley Field because the team is notorious for playing mainly day games. This is because Wrigley Field didn’t even have lights until 1988. Needless to say, I was excited to be part of a unique atmosphere in Wrigleyville.

Wrigleyville is one big party whenever the Cubs play and I just wanted to be part of this historic baseball atmosphere. Obviously, I needed to get tickets in order to prolong my experience.

Gradually, I had a slick idea. Then I proceeded to talk to everyone so that I could get some intel about the tricks and trade of Cub’s culture.

As I studied the crowd and groups of interesting fans, I got word where to get tickets for under 30 dollars.

Scouring through the streets and at every bar, at last, I found him.

“Tickets! Anyone need tickets?!” shouted the Scalpin Man.

I turned my head and studied the environment. Noticing a ticket map of the field next to where he was standing on the street, I felt like I could trust this man.

“How much?” said by yours truly.

“Thirty-five.”

“Twenty-five,” I replied.

“Sold.”

Just because I showed up in Chicago, I was rewarded. Life rewards those who show up. Certainly, I did not expect to be eating a Chicago style hot dog at Wrigley Field when I woke up at two in the morning earlier that day. I did not expect to even get tickets to the game, especially for dirt cheap. The only thing that I wanted was a fun adventure so that I could tell a really cool story.

Afterall, it is absolutely necessary to take risks and go on spontaneous adventures in life to collect wisdom through life experiences.

Keep in mind that this was only my first day of a four-day sojourn to Chicago. This all happened to me because I woke up in the middle of the night just because I wanted to go on an adventure.

Sometimes, you need to throw yourself out of your comfort zone and to have the ability to say “yes” to new situations. What would life be like if no one ever took chances or went on spontaneous adventures?

I’ll let you answer that question.

Always Take Your Friend to the Airport.

“Sorry, guys. I have to leave early to get to bed so that I can drop off my buddy at the airport at four in the morning,” said the loyal friend.

“Oh, come on. Just have him call an Uber or a Lyft and stay out with us,” replied by the fool.

I strongly believe in always dropping off and picking up your friends at the airport.

When your friend tells you that they are going on a vacation, volunteer yourself to take them to the airport.

It’s simple.

If your friend asks, say yes.

There should be no hesitation, and that is that.

Personally, I find the whole airport experience a true test of friendship because of the stressful nature that the both of you are put in with each other.

Coming out on top with this task puts you over a huge hurdle only strengthens your friendship. This courteous action is small but is always received with graciousness.

On the front end, there is just a beauty in taking someone to the airport because of the adventure. There is something about the subtle setting, weather, excitement, and anxiousness that fills the car with a silent pandemonium that is just ever so noticed.

Afterall, the person next to you is relying on you to get them to a place on time so that they can get on a giant bird to fly off to a foreign land.

That is a lot of pressure. Can you rely on a Lyft or Uber driver to get you to the airport if you are running a little late or hit a traffic jam? I will let that be a rhetorical question for everyone to debate.

Seriously, would a ride service driver put the pedal to the medal at 100 mph on the shoulder of the highway for you?

No.

But, I would because I care about my friends getting to the airport on time.

The conversations provide butterflies prior to the drop-off. Hearing about your friend’s excitement about their trip, what their plans are, or what type of adventure they are trying to embark on is worth the gesture. It could also be quite the opposite as well as some people are afraid of flying.

No matter the circumstance, at the end of the day you are helping someone out and that is all that matters.

Personally, I always get nervous for my friends after I drop them off. Airplanes do not bring a 100% guarantee of the notion of safe travels.

When your friend closes that door and heads to the check in desk, that could be the last time you see your friend whether if something goes awry on the plane or if that is the last time that you will be seeing them for a while.

Isn’t there just something is bittersweet about that?

On the contrary, picking up a friend from the airport is just as dazzling. Your friend is tired from a long day of traveling and what better for them to see a familiar face?

Maybe they are visiting, coming home, getting back from a business trip or vacation; there is always a lot to talk about. When you pick up your friend because you’re the first person that they are going to talk to face to face about their time away.

Whenever I do this, I always take that friend out for dinner or drinks afterward. If it is early in the morning, I always get them coffee or McDonald’s breakfast. Think about it, you need to celebrate the fact that your friend got on a steel bird, flew in the air and landed safely.

Whenever you pick up your friend at the airport you are celebrating life and a reunion of a friendship.

There is a beautiful bond in this gesture that never goes unappreciated. Traveling is hard and getting a little support doesn’t hurt.

Helping someone makes the world better a little by little.

Always take your friend to the airport.

An Analysis of Mental Illness in Westeros.

Recently, I have become very attached to the characters in the Game of Thrones universe as I have recently become a major fan of the show. My biggest conclusion about the show is that if you strip out all of the fables, lore, tales, and fantasy, we are all hooked on the characters because of their biggest struggle: mental illness.

The wonders of this theme have become a major phenomenon of exploration because it enters a realm of the unknown. Still to this day, many of the types of disorders do not have set cures because the types of illnesses are not a one size fits all diagnosis.

Back then (GoT times), if you were mentally ill, you were viewed as a crazy person. Maesters even had no such knowledge of such things in the books or the show.

After reading loads of books on mental illnesses and studying it closely, I have come to the conclusion that for a professional to give a clear diagnosis, the subject needs to be observed over a long stretch of time.

There is no such blood test to figure out what mental disorder someone has.

Since mental illness is a matter of observation, luckily, we have over 60 plus hours of material to observe our favorite characters to make an educated assumption.

Here is my diagnosis of mental health disorders in Game of Thrones.

Jamie and Cersei Lannister, the two biggest antagonists are defined by Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. The two most mentally ill in the series, Cersei being Borderline whereas Jamie suffers from being a Narcissist. The reason why I say they are the illest is that they suffer the most and they are obliviously ignorant of combatting these disorders.

Cersei is defined by her identity crisis, only identifying with her children, which is her only redeeming quality, going to great lengths in order to protect and preserve their power. There is a flip-side of this coin, with the ulterior motive of keeping herself in power; a major tell tale sign of BPD.

Cersei-and-Tommen-cersei-lannister-31097766-500-275.png

Another identifying factor of BPD is that they are attracted to people with the Narcissistic Personality disorder because they feel as one with them, hence why Cersei loves Jamie so much. Many times, she has reiterated that she’d rather have been born a man, seeing in her brother what she has always wanted to be.

https---blueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com-uploads-story-thumbnail-11471-Jaime-and-Cersei-Lannister-in-Game-of-Thrones-Controversy.jpg

Fear of abandonment is another huge trait of BPD. Thus, the reason why she hates Jamie for being captured or disappearing multiple times and the major smothering of her little lion cubs. Her beauty and sexuality towards her brother give her a sense of security, satisfaction, and validation.

On the other hand, Jamie craves validation and attention, giving him the motive of being attracted to someone like Cersei.

People with BPD endlessly are attracted to people with risky behavior and a strong sense of self-identity, henceforth why Cersei is enamored with her brother. BPD and NPD are a very dangerous combination thereupon, Jamie’s actions give Cersei the identity that she craves.

b9c730f725922a5a5bda8bdc69433751d61abda0_hq.jpg

Adding to this, when Jamie is away from Cersei, he becomes more rational and relatable to the audience while being away from her influence. The worst part of all is that this is not even the most messed up relationship of the show which belongs to Stannis and Melisandre.

The two suffer from Shared Psychosis from different points of view. Both are enamored with the notion of “Me, myself and I”, causing them to lose all sense of reality.

Imagine if Jamie and Cersei had some couples therapy, and how that would change their perspectives on how they view and treat each other. If you want more information about couples counseling, click this link right here.

The Red Priestess has a messed up view of the world and a strong sense of identity making her the perfect master of the marionette to control Stannis. She uses her sexuality and extrasensory visions to influence Stannis’ missing sense of identity.

maxresdefault-2.jpg

Moving on, Narcissistic Alcoholism is the spot on diagnosis for Tyrion Lannister, everyone’s favorite dwarf from Casterly Rock. He suffers from being outcasted and is the reason why he turns to alcohol to mask his insecurity and pain. Also, he suffers from the family trait of narcissism and by adding constant drinking to the mix, it only adds fuel to that fire.

Alcohol is the worst drug for mental illness because it is legal and it is a depressant providing provocations of mental illness within the categories of addiction and risky behavior. The drug brings great highs of happiness for short periods of time then to only bring traumatizing lows for even a much longer time after the drug is cleared from your system, leading to more even more consumption.

As prescribed by every psychiatrist in the world, they say to absolutely not drink alcohol if you suffer from any mental illness, especially while on medication.

The correct term for this diagnosis that I will elaborate on is called Anti-Social Personality Disorder, in more common terms; being a sociopath. The second most hated character on the show, Joffrey Baratheon is a diagnosed with this, in which not to be confused with being a psychopath.

Being the most unstable character in the show, he never took consideration of others, not even for his own Mother. With that, he had no control of his emotions or outbursts which are another indicating factor of being a sociopath.

got_joffrey_evil.jpg

Joffrey took pleasure from sadism by killing, hurting and torturing people out of pure irrational thought, doing what pleased him at that very moment. Incapable of empathy, he had no control of his emotions and lacked charisma, classifying him as a sociopath.

Changing lanes, Arya Stark has been on quite the journey. Since arriving in King’s Landing and at the moment of her Father’s beheading, she has always been in survival mode. This the foremost defining characteristic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Arya has constantly been on the run from many others, as well as the Lannister’s. Our favorite little Avenger has lost friends, family, and everyone she’s cared about. During her sojourn from Winterfell, she has witnessed the most gruesome sites that we have seen. She is always looking for danger and is hypervigilant, causing her to be perpetually trapped in the mindset of survival, trusting nobody.

arya-stark-arya-stark-23881737-1920-1080.jpg

Despite her reuniting with her family, you can see these trait’s of Arya blatantly come out. The only thing that can ease her PTSD is being in a safe space and for her to recognize it, and I believe that she has the potential to do so now that she is home.

Next, we have the most hated character in the show, Ramsay Bolton (Snow). What is the difference between a Psychopath and a Sociopath you may ask? Joffrey and Ramsay are great examples to define this misconception. Ramsay is a master at controlling, manipulating and masking his emotions, especially to the situation and for other people’s needs. Like Ramsay, Psychopath’s are masterminds of malleable emotion on the outside but on the inside, they feel no remorse, sympathy or any empathy.

BoB-1.jpg

Being a master of manipulation, the best example of Ramsay is how he manipulates Sansa, Littlefinger, and Theon, tricking them for his own personal gain. Psychopaths act rational, planning 100 steps in advance with a greater ulterior motive. Being as strategic as Ramsay is, his number one goal is to find approval from his Father only in order to become warden of the North. Whereas Joffrey, a sociopath, has no personal agenda, acting cruelly out of impulse.

Let’s talk about one of the most beloved characters on the show, Jon Snow, a dreary bastard who represents the most common mental illness of Depression. Jon is the most relatable character in the show because just about everyone can relate to depression and he is one stoic gloomy dude.

Like many of us, Jon just wants to find his purpose in the world, wondering why he is here and has been put through all of this dismay. He is raised in the North and being the most far north of the wall, Jon like most northerner’s in real life are very prone to depression because of how cold climates and winter triggers depression.

Seeing as his love, friends, and family get killed while he can do nothing about it, this leaves him feeling like a failure. Being a bastard of Ned Stark has always lead him to believe that he is worthless in the world no matter how hard he tries to do the right thing. On top of that, even with his success of being the Lord Commander of the Night’s watch, an egalitarian society, half of his men hate him want him dead because he does the honorable thing by letting the Wildlings passed the wall.

maxresdefault.jpg

Poor, Jon Snow.

After his resurrection, his watch ended and he is charged with the title as King of The North. Now he is tasked with the impossible mission of trying to defeat an army of ice demons and dead people. On top of this, no one really believes him about this threat. Don’t you just feel for this guy? His intentions are good but in the eyes of others and even within himself, he can’t do anything right no matter how hard he tries.

His depression is felt by many audiences and is why he is our favorite because the masses relate to this disorder. Notice how we relate to Arya, Jon, Tyrion, and Daenerys more so than the others that I have mentioned because these are the most common illnesses that the masses particularize with.

I am in perpetual search of someone who is a loyal fan of Cersei.

Lastly, she is gentle or brutal, I want to end by talking about the Mother of Dragons. Representing Bipolar I disorder, her emotions, rationality, reasoning, temperament, and mood always fall under the scale of either mania or depression. There is no middle ground with her. We have seen her at many lows of sadness and depression with many highs of anger, frustration, productive ambition, and happiness.

People with Bipolar Disorder have an insurmountable image and expectation of themselves. For example, she thinks she is no ordinary human because she can’t be burned, birthed dragons and controls them. People follow her upon seeing her beauty and obey her. This makes her the most entitled character in the show because she thinks that the Iron Throne is hers automatically.

A lot of people who suffer from Bipolar I Disorder have an image similar to this of themselves, being delusional, but not many get to face the realities of their own self-image like Daenerys does. When a person with this disorder takes on the actual reality of whom they think they are, it is a very dangerous combination as we can see with the Mother of Dragons.

She hit’s depression many times for longer periods of mania, then she snaps out of it by unleashing her wrath upon people, furthering her feeling of invincibility as a pure source of a temporary fix for her frustrations. She fits the bill because we see her character go through the five parts of the Bipolar spectrum:

1. Depression
2. Dysthymia
3. Equilibrium (Normal)
4. Hypomania
5. Mania

She either slowly progresses one way or shoots from one side to the other.

maxresdefault-1.jpg

Bipolar disorder for me is the hardest to explain in short terms out of all mental disorders because of the five parts which expand into many smaller fragments. There are so many factors that cause the chemical imbalance of the brain, mind body and soul when it comes to this disorder.

The most simple example of her is mania when she is conquering and dysthymia when she is ruling.

Afterall, she flys around on a dragon and you can see why she has this mythical idea of herself, which is why she is the representative Bipolar I Disorder.

Let’s look at the mentally healthy in the show:

1. The dead Starks.
2. Renly Baratheon.
3. Barisstan Selmy.
4. Doran Martell.
5. Jeor Mormont.
6. Lady Tulisa.
7. Loris Tyrell.
8. Marcella Baratheon.
9. The Queen of Thorn’s.
10. Margaery Tyrell.

What do these character’s have in common? They are all dead.

Throughout history, there has been a recurring theme of mad ruler’s and conquerors. No man or woman should have all this power because people who do, end up going insane. In Game of Thrones or in reality, people with power tend to overuse it from Donald Trump to Joffrey Baratheon; no one man or woman should have all that power.

In my final conclusion, whoever can tame their mental disorder the best in the show, will come out on top in the series finale.

We Remain! Theory of Reincarnation.

My Grandmother on my Mom’s side of the family once said to me, “You only die once. I will never be cremated.” Naturally, as a 14-year-old boy, this thought stuck with me. This year my best friend, Grandpa Jim passed away. It has seriously affected me this year.

I watched him suffer a long and painful death every day in the hospital for almost a month. He didn’t deserve that. He should have died a beautiful death. Short and sweet.

If I had known that after saying goodbye to him on his death bed was the last time that I would physically see him, then I would have stayed. But, I am glad about the choice that I made to walk away and not see his final moments. He will always be alive to me because he remains.

His ashes were buried at the Lakewood Cemetary and I miss him so much that when I was bouncing around this winter, I found a place two blocks from the cemetery so I could visit him every week.

People have their choice of life after death and it is a scary thing to think about. Remember now, the only thing guaranteed in life is death and the concept of departure is a beautiful thing.

Visualize being enclosed in a golden coffin, then encased in a golden sarcophagus, maybe even being memorialized in a mausoleum or pyramid. We always over look the fact that death is a celebrated thing in this world.

images.jpg

A popular idea of death is reincarnation, but being reborn doesn’t always mean that you will come back as a chicken, lizard or panther. I believe that it means that you will break down into trillions of little atoms that will scatter all over the world, furthering yourself to become anything and everything.

I never understood why people would want to have their ashes scattered into the ocean, the Grand Canyon or even Fenway Park until I saw my Grandpa in a tin can.

fenway_480x200.jpg

Here is my final thought:

I have been watching a lot of ‘Game of Thrones’ and I am infatuated with Melissandre. She has sold me on the Lord of Light. Now, stay with me now because this is quite the left turn.

melisandre.jpg

Hypothetically when I depart, I want my children or my loved ones to take my beaten body to the fire and then take my ashes to the Mississipi River. I want them to stand on the western side and throw them into the river.

There will be seven billion pieces of my atoms floating in that river that will travel to cities, reservoirs and they will distribute into the earth, the water we drink, into the air and the food we eat.

When people drink that water, they will drink a part of me and I will be a part of them.

My tiny little atoms will one day be apart of everyone. All seven billion of them for all seven billion people.

This is why we are all one in the same, made up of atoms, water, and mass.

Henceforth my interpretation of the theory of reincarnation and why people decide to scatter their ashes.

This is why we all remain.

We Are Revolutionarials, not Millenials.

If punk rock saved rock and roll back in the mid 70’s, then a revival of this culture in the Millennial age can create a revolution to defeat the oppression that we face. America will never be great again because historically speaking, world powers reign for 300 years. But, if we rethink our approach, we can make America prosper, providing the direction that the world needs to go.

We have the potential of starting a revolution as Millenials.

The maltreatment of our generation is caused by our leaders, politicians, reporters, protectors and our image of pop culture.

They all need to be shut down.

We Millennials are now a generation way bigger than the Baby Boomers. Millennials already have the power and we are not using it responsibly.

We need to channel it properly.

Screen shot 2017-08-06 at 6.09.23 PM.png

Look:

We have set back multiple industries such as the automotive, real estate, commercial restaurant, corporate America, golf, napkins, motorcycles, and so much more!

Why are we called Millennials? That is a ludicrous name.

We are the Revolutionarials.

There are all of these little movements right now that aren’t going anywhere. Let’s be real.

Revolutions need two things:

1. A person to believe in.
2. People who are 100% sold on this person and completely against the opposed person or group.

We are Revolutionarials, the punk rockers of our time.

Our President is a cartoon character who has used this platform to monger the attention that he craves. Does he even like being President?

Let’s stop watching the news. Turn off CNN, FOX, and ABC! They want our attention and quite frankly, I don’t think we have time for that.

Think of an attention crazed dog who barks constantly to no one.

Screen shot 2017-08-06 at 6.09.33 PM.png

Us Revolutionarials need to start making our own history.

Put down the newspapers, magazines, and turn off your television that is all controlled by Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers who are out of touch with how this rising generation feels. They are not the enemy, but they are adding fuel to the fire of the enemy’s oppressive repercussions.

Who cares what we have to say? We can say more by not saying or doing anything at all.

Imagine if everyone in New York City stopped riding the subway. What if we stopped using all government programs that are provided? Or if everyone in the US stopped paying taxes. Picture if we stopped listening to the media by watching the news.

We can say and do more by pure disdain.

I am sick and tired of people who are standing with the Philistines, calling us Millenials, when we are silently revolutionizing the world through our laissez faire approach. Let’s start using this power towards something impactful.

Screen shot 2017-08-06 at 6.09.40 PM.png

We can start the biggest revolution by ignoring our infrastructure. Then the opposition will truly hear us, giving Revolutionarials the power to make the changes that we need.

It is our responsibility to hone this power that we have because we are the revolutionary generation.

Forget about hairstyles, touchdown records, body types, status symbols, and the rug that ties the room together.

We can defeat the Philistines because all they want us to do is pay attention to the corruption.

We shall never overcome if we keep screaming.

When the moment is right, our revolutionary leader will appear. Thereupon, we can finally strike, screaming louder than ever before just like our punk rock forefathers did before us.

Once we become silent, we will become heard.

Remember, “The Zos Knows”.

Our Path That Follows.

Prologue:

The Oxford dictionary defines the word, “anxious” as:
Feeling or showing worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.

Anxiety Ensues the Thoroughfare:

Latin has some wicked smart phrases. “Quo Vadis” has always been one that has stuck with me asking, “Where are you going?”

That is the true question, isn’t it? But, it also provides anxiety due to the wonders of what the light or darkness that will reveal itself to be.

The most exciting entity of life is the journey of one’s self. There are two mindsets when it comes to this ideology. One having tunnel vision, being so focused to reach one’s ambitions. The other is being an ambitious wandering soul that eventually get’s back on track after their sojourn from the beaten path.

road-trip.jpg

Every highway has exits leading to other roads. Some decide to drive to their destination directly to their objective. Other’s take detours to explore new roads of their lives.

The road isn’t straight and narrow for me. I am a thrill seeker that loves to explore culture, people, vocations, and philosophies. But, if the undertaking does not excite me then I’ll head onward the road north once more, never looking back.

A lot of us stray from the path that follows. Whereas, straight forward minded people see the end game better than those who are free spirited pirates.

There is no right or wrong of how we take our steps towards our final destination. A great example is athletes who represent people as ones who are focused towards their ending ambition versus artists-entrepreneurs, representing the “roaming Globetrotters” that stray away only to come back again once they find their path towards their final destination.

The world needs both in order to survive.

Either way, it doesn’t matter how we get there because we all eventually will see the light or the darkness at the end of the road because both school’s of thought have different ideas of ambition.

There needs to be a slight touch between the both mindsets because there is an anxiousness of where we want to go and how we will arrive.

unnamed.jpg

Getting thrown off a 1,100 pound bull in Arizona.

Under the philosophy of Yin (dark) and Yang (light), there needs to be a dab of both for the two outlooks on the path that follows.

Focused-strait and narrow people need to find the Yang to open their mind’s to other sensations. It is okay to explore the dangers of their fear of dark cheap thrills before seeing the light at the end.

Whereas for drifter’s like myself, we need to find that slight stroke of Yin because we are afraid of the darkness that may lurk at the cusp. This is why we have tendencies to stray away on different exits of the highway to obtain new forms of light because of the fear of darkness. Eventually, one day we will not stray away from the darkness that may lurk at the end.

This is why we must become the hybrid travelers for the path that follows.

After observing people’s motives, I have come to a vast conclusion that a lot of people want “pretty or shiny” at the end of their highway. The “pretty” car or “shiny” television and etc.

King Louis XVI

Opulence was created by monarch’s to show status. It’s too bad that for the duration of history, we have tried to emulate terrible rulers and conquerors.

This is not the road for me at all but, if it is for you then take it.

All I want the most is life experiences. This is an addiction, making me yearn for more. This is why I will continue to take those exits and visit situations until I can find my purpose.

Saying, “yes”, to most situations may sound like a risky outlook on life. But, I know it will serve me well.

“Zos, Seeker of Thrills”

If ever I stray too far from the path that follows, please grab my ear and drag me back to the road so I can continue writing for y’all.

Epilogue:

Do not let the anxiousness fear you from the thoroughfare because eventually, we’ll find our true purpose.

Follow the Chinese philosophy because balance is the key.

If you’re all about the destination then don’t take the road. Get a good travel agent and book a flight.

We Can Get Better!

Take a black marker and write these subtle words on your chest, “Get Better.”

As a proud standing-ambassador for idealism, it breaks my heart to see the negativity that people exude upon themselves. Optimism, realism, and pessimism are the three bases of the human mindset.

Many times, people have said that I have this optimistic energy that is welded in of me, mirroring the optimism of a child.

The major thing that strains my soul is how people dwell on past hardships to open up to people at a starting point of a relationship. Continuing under this notion, people make excuses for themselves to prevent them from their goals is just an absolute detriment to humanity.

Instead, we should talk about the future. Rather than hearing about your struggles, let’s hear about what you are most excited about in your life. This is one of my favorite questions to ask people.

Tell me what your ambitions are and how you will achieve them. These are the conversations that we should be having at the dinner table, bars, parks, beaches and etc.

Spread love, joy, positivity, and encouragement to this world. Not self-doubt and the disparaging negativity that we see everywhere.

Even I admit to this blunder, but I make myself just snap out of it immediately because being down and out is a pointless-unproductive use of our time.

People open up to me constantly about how terrible their pasts are, breaking my heart because there is absolutely no point for remorse.

Never forget your past but remember, we should be constantly moving forward, not repentantly reminiscing.

Optimism.jpg

Seriously, there is no time to be depressed in this lifetime.

We only have so little time to live, because the only thing guaranteed in this world is death. So, let’s live.

Your past may have shaped you, but it doesn’t matter where you come from, it only matter’s where you go.

Henceforth, we might as well live it with a full throttling sense of indubitable optimism.

My experience of being a heartbroken soul has taught me to be strong, not wasting my time on things preventing me from being positive.

When you keep moving forward with a positive attitude, your skin becomes thicker, the road rises up to meet you, your engine run’s more smooth and you learn how to take the high road.

Every day is a chance for self-improvement. Even if you have ten minutes to do something every day towards your goal, this precious amount of time will put you closer to your achievement.

My Grandmother stuck a chord with me, referring to someone else in a different context, but here it is:

“So, what. Take ten steps out of the house. Then take ten the next day. Then you will be taking 100 steps a week from now. Soon you’ll be halfway down the street to the convenient store.”

Me after hiking up a mountain named Monserrate in Bogota, Colombia.

Children enter our world with uncanny amounts of enthusiasm. The greatest advantage you can have in life is an optimistically filled positive attitude.

When we enter the early stages of adulthood, we tend to shift away from the “I can do anything attitude”, becoming realists who see things for what they are rather than what they can become, resulting in obtaining a worse attitude about life.

Moreover, when people grow older, we begin to obtain a sense of pessimism, completely losing all sense of hope towards our overall ambition that we had when we were once teenagers.

This is the trending pattern that I see. As for me, I fall victim into the realm of realism. But, I always rejoice because I breathe my wrath of optimism back out in the universe. I just don’t have time to feel sorry for myself.

The greatest disability you can have is a bad attitude.

We can fix any mess during this lifetime. You just need to have that idealistic vision, enabling yourself to see the sun behind the clouds.

Life is too short to just spend it indoors, waiting for the storm to pass. You just need to get out and face the storm; head on.

Never lose that sense of childish buoyancy because we can get better.

I am not trying to change the world so that people think like me. But, we can always get our shit together, one foot before the other every day.

We can get better because we’re not dead yet.

Why I “Gave Up” My Dream of Being a Filmmaker; For Now.

While I was at university, I realized that I was out of place. It is hard for one to be an individual amongst the millennial mindset in such an evolutionary era.

Stumbling home one night alone, I decided to watch the cult classic film, Reservoir Dogs. A bomb went off in my head, becoming dead set on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: be a filmmaker.

My greatest dream that I ever had stemmed from an inebriated earthquake-explosion. I was a fool.

It was powerful having this interest that no one else had at university. I even went to film school in LA, wrote 10 screenplays and shot a feature film. This made me stand out, feeling on top of the world.

Quentin Tarantino’s Cult Classic Masterpiece.

But in reality, it was a fabrication for a false reality.

I shot my mouth off to everyone in Minneapolis about how I was going to be the greatest filmmaker. Sadly, this is what I enjoyed the most about my so-called passion besides discovering my love of writing.

The process of shooting my first feature film was an important learning curve. I tried to reinvent every inch of the production, creating major shortcuts. If you make shortcuts for your passions, then that is not the dream or passion for you.

Do I call myself a failure? Hell to the no! By experiencing the process and wearing every hat, I learned what I was capable of.

I couldn’t tell you who that guy is in that picture.

Two years and one mediocre film later, I realized what I was meant to do and that is to tell people how I feel, inspiring hope with my literature.

There was a huge infatuation that I had with filmmaking, but I didn’t love the process. I loved the idea of what filmmaking could provide for me when I was to strike gold. Going to Hollywood premieres, parties and meeting actors. Just the glitz and glamor.

I’ve always known that I am a process person. But, the film production process isn’t for me.

There is a great analogy about how Cam Newton loves what football provides for him but he doesn’t love the process. Tom Brady loves the process hence, he is a champion. I want to be a champion.

brand-strategy

Be a process person.

Being a dreamer isn’t bad, it is good for the soul. But, nobody ever talks about being a realitier. Living life isn’t easy with your eyes closed because you will crash into concrete walls.

Passions are synonymous with dreams. Your passions should be your secondary goals in life while the contemporary goals are your opportunities. Don’t follow a passion, pursue your opportunities.

Play the cards in life that you are dealt with the integrity to win.

If I really wanted to be a filmmaker, then I would be in LA, running amongst the others in the Hollywood rat race. I would have made it happen, but I dreamt too much and it’s nowhere near my realities.

It was a mere dream that I was too scared to wake up from.

No one can live in your dreams but people can live in your reality. By all means, follow your passions if and only if the opportunities present themselves.

When you don’t make or create your opportunities while the fire is hot then your head will be in the clouds forever. You will just be a dreamer and the process will never create you into a realitier.

I just started my quest of being a realitier last October when my best friend died. It saddens me that a death made my eyes open, realizing that life is easier to live without a blinding mask on.

His death provided me the opportunity to realize that finding success requires accomplishing three things:

1. Obtain wealth.
2. Obtain lands.
3. Create armies.

These opportunities to do these three things have presented themselves to me. I am going to take this route of finding a sustainable career. This is the new hand of cards that have been dealt and I must explore this opportunity.

Amongst this three ring ideology; if you get to have a family then you will be the most blessed because this is the ultimate success in life.

Remember success does not mean happiness. Happiness is based on perception. Having a family is my idea of happiness.

My best friend was my Grandfather, and despite being a spitting image of his face and soul; I want to be nothing like him.

I was born to win and there is a thirst for it. Never have I been victorious in anything significant; but that is yet to come. The only way I can do this is to offer the world my truest self and to spread positivity, love, and joy to all.

It is time to stop dreaming. The opportunities are presenting themselves, filmmaking is not an option.

Recently, I sold a television pilot to an agent who is shopping it around. If the opportunity presents itself then I will be able to pursue my passions. As for now, I have other opportunities to create an amazing life for the people I care about.

For now, I am using my opportunities in order to work on my dreams. I discovered if you follow your opportunities, your dreams will come back to you.

The old adage states, “If you love something set it free, and if it loves you, it will come back to you”.

I am working on a dream. It may seem far away, but the following of opportunity will make it my reality one day.

This is why I choose to be a realitier versus a dreamer.

This was the final lesson that my Grandfather taught me and it is quite stoic. This is strange because James Zosel was a hopeless romantic dreamer.

Being a filmmaker will not lead me to uphold my duty. It is not the process that I want to be a part of yet. This does not mean that I will give up on this passion because if I the three ring ideology to victory, then I can definitely produce a film by the time that I leave this earth; hopefully with a large loving family.

Life is about the forgotten dreams from the slumber that you awaken from, then having to deal with getting up and taking on the “reality of the day”. Once you can undergo this notion, the only thing left to do is breathe.

icecube

The process of filmmaking taught me that I need to keep writing. Ice Cube wrote himself out of Compton, JD Salinger scratched himself to a coming of age revolution, and Stan Lee assembled his Avengers. So, I better keep a pen in my hand at all times.

I need to write it all.
